Walk Across Texas hits halfway mark

The Walk Across Texas, an 8- week program to walk 800+ miles, is at its midpoint now with half the teams exceeding their goals.

The public health recommendations suggest that everyne should accumulate 30-60 minutes of moderate physical activity daily, according to a press release from the Texas Cooperative Extensions services who are sponsoring the WAT.

To achieve a positive health outcome, people should take 10,000 steps per day, which equals 5 miles. Many Americans only take around 3,200 - 5,000 steps per day.

Jasper County has been helping promote a better walking/health habit by joining the Walk Across Texas. Here are the results at the mid-way point:

Teams:

Trailblazers - 629 miles

Advanced Financial Services - 599 miles

Jasper Junior High School - 424 miles

Kirbyville TOPS #1841 - 206 miles

Happy Feet - 138 miles

Individuals:

Jackie Paschall - 55 miles Sue Burks - 41 miles Dorthea Pearson - 16 miles

The county total so far is more than 2,000 miles, two thirds the distance across the United States. For more information, contact Cindy VanDevender at the county extension office, 384-3721.
