It's time for Jasper to avoid greed, grow

I am sick and tired of the greedy people trying to get city tax dollars for their own pockets.

The last city council meeting told the whole story. A local realtor wants the city tax payers to pay to lay a pipe that will only serve property he plans to develop.

A Rayburn fisherman wants control of the hotel/motel tax to go to the Chamber of Commerce so he can direct the money to his pet fishing tournaments at the expense of other projects.

And a restaurant owner boldly proclaimed the last thing the city needed was a civic center, a restaurant owner.

Is there any wonder why the City of Jasper has not grown in 30 years? With these greedy self-servers it is no surprise that most of them do not even live in the city, they just want the money.

I hope and pray the current city leaders will stand and do the right thing and not bend to the pressure of the vocal mob. They always seem to be the same people.

It is way past time that city leaders stand for the city and its tax payers and not these greedy individuals. Then Jasper will grow.

The Jasper Newsboy would like to publish your thoughts and concerns about issues that are important to you.

All Letters to the Editor should be accompanied with the writer's name and daytime telephone number for verification purposes.

Phone numbers will not be published, but the author's name will be.

Under no circumstances will the author's name be withheld.

All letters are subject to editing for newspaper style and clarity, without changing the meaning of the content.

Letters should be limited to 300 words.

Letters endorsing or opposing political candidates are considered political advertising and will be forwarded to the advertising department.

Deadline for letters is 10 a.m. Monday to be published in the following Wednesday's publication.
