Clerk stabbed multiple times during robbery

A 29-year-old Jasper man was apprehended Wednesday, Dec. 5, in connection with the aggravated robbery of Sunshine #16 Grocery.

Michael Dewayne Carter, 29, was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. Carter was arraigned Friday, Dec. 7 by Justice of the Peace Ronnie Billingsley and is currently being held in the Jasper County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bond.

According to Jasper Police reports, officer Gerald Hudson was patrolling the area when he was flagged down by a witness and informed of the robbery.

When Hudson approached the scene, he saw Carter in the rear of the gas station. Hudson called to Carter to stop but, according to police reports, Carter told Hudson "the guy you are looking for was on the other side of the store."

Hudson noticed Carter had blood all over his clothing and ordered him to his patrol vehicle, where Carter was handcuffed.

Hudson then went into the store and found the clerk, identified as Adiani Ali Hasam, 47, of Jasper, covered in blood after suffering multiple stab wounds.

Jasper Police officer Chris Shives arrived at the scene as backup for Hudson and found a knife covered in blood behind Hudson's patrol vehicle.

While being questioned by police, Carter said "he would own up to what he had done" but insisted another suspect was involved who had left in a black vehicle. Hudson reported there were no other vehicles in the parking lot when he arrived on the scene.

Carter sustained injuries to his head when he continually banged his head on the passenger side window and back cage of the patrol vehicle. Carter was transported to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released back to police custody.

Hasam was transported to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont where he underwent surgery and remains in the intensive care unit.

The robbery marks the ninth in the city of Jasper this year. In all, Jasper Police has solved all nine robberies committed in the city limits.
