Clerk's office gearing up for March election Candidates for the March election have until Jan. 2 to file for a place on the ballot, according to Jasper County Clerk Debbie Newman. All the constables, the sheriff, tax assessor, Precincts 1 and 3 commissioners, and District 1A judge are up for election this time. Diana South of the county clerk's office said new voter registration cards were mailed last week, and that anyone who does not receive one by the first of January should contact the county clerk's office. "We're expecting a lot back this time," South said, "because of the 911 addresses." Many people in Jasper use their old address and the mailperson still delivers their mail correctly, but by law the Post Office cannot forward a voter registration card, according to South. If a card is returned, that voter's name goes in the suspension file, which will not prevent the person from voting but may take extra time to correct on election day. People who have not registered to vote have until Feb. 4 to do so. |
