Food banks report critical food shortage

Recently there was an article in the New York Times concerning food banks around the country that are reporting critical shortages of food.

Some food banks have resorted to rationing food, distributing staples that usually reserved for disaster relief, or even shutting down operations.

The Newton community is not immune to the food shortage, according to Joe Miller Jr. The Food Share purshases as much food as possible from the Southeast Texas Food Bank in Beaumont, but it recently has not been able to provide enough food to meet the demand.

"Local supermarketst have been contacted to try and stretch dollars, but lately finances have been slipping backwards. They can accept financial or non-perishable food donations," according to Miller.
