Your Viewpoint Letters to the Editor Enjoy music of Christmas this year By WINCYWALKER Jasper Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!...For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth...The kingdom of this world ...Is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ... And He shall reign for ever and ever... Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!..-- from Messiah, by Georg Friedrich Handel One of my most favorite things about Christmas is the music and my very favorite is the Hallelujah Chorus, from Messiah, by Handel, which is performed a lot during Christmas. Handel was a devout Christian and Messiah reflects his faith. The text of the chorus is taken from the King James Bible. In many parts of the world it is traditional for the audience to stand during the Hallelujah Chorus. Legend has it that King George II was so moved by the music that he stood to his feet when he heard it, requiring that his subjects follow suit. Poor King George II--his hair would have stood on its end if he had lived to hear it performed by the Morman Tabernacle Choir.
