Newton, Woodville garner all-district honors for teams

District champion Newton placed 20 teams on the District 23-2A All- District squad while the Woodville Eagles placed 12 members on the postseason squad.

Coming into the 2007 season, Newton Head Football Coach Curtis Barbay knew his seniors would play a big part in this year's success.

"Depending on how our seniors do will determine what kind of team we have," Barbay said. "They have to step up. We should have a good team if they want to step up and play but you never know about that."

Of Newton's 20 honors, 11 came from seniors on the squad.

Woodville Head Football Coach Steve Fentress also knew he had seniors who could play coming into this season.

"Most of our key players will be seniors this year," Fentress said back in August. "We have some underclassmen that will be playing a lot but we have a big senior class and that's a good thing for us."

Of Woodville's 12 players earning post-season honors, five were seniors.

Newton dominated the individual honors as the Eagles earned the District MVP, offensive and defensive MVP and coach of the year.

Newton quarterback Nicholas Adams was named the district's MVP while senior running back Justin McLemore was named offensive MVP. Junior linebacker Mike Jenkins and senior lineman Logan Davis were named co-defensive players of the year for Newton. Newton junior Ken Hunter was named as one of six spec ial teams players of the year.

Rounding out the individual honors for Newton was legendary coach Curtis Barbay, who named coach of the year in the district.

Woodville's freshman kicker Taylor Rhorer was named first-team kicker and special teams player of the year.

Newton, who won the District 23-2A title, placed four players on the firstteam offensive squad.

Senior tight end Dillon Flanigan, senior offensive lineman Jim Ed Hughes, senior offensive lineman Jeff Byerly and junior split end Stephen Alfred were named to the first-team offensive squad.

Newton also placed four players on the first-team defensive team.

Newton senior strong safety Dominique Hartsfield, senior defensive back Nelson Watson, junior defensive tackle Quinn Foster and sophomore defensive end Malcolm Mattox earned first-team defensive honors.

Woodville, who battled until the final week for a Class 2A playoff berth, placed three players on the first-team offensive squad.

Woodville senior running back Adam Rigsby, senior offensive lineman Cody Butler and senior offensive lineman Landra Lee earned first-team offensive selections for Woodville.

Woodville placed two teams on the first-team defensive squad.

Junior running back James Burch, junior receiver Jacoby Ross and junior offensive lineman Cory McEfreen earned secondteam offensive selections.

Four Newton Eagles gained second-team defensive nods.

Senior defensive back Trevain Ethridge, senior defensive back James Mattox, senior defensive lineman Dillon Flannigan and junior DeAngelo Twine were named to the second-team defensive squad.

Woodville placed five players on the secondteams.

Woodville senior quarterback Stephen Williams, junior fullback Eric Davis and sophomore running back Jarvis Barlow earned second-team offensive selections.

Woodville senior defensive end Cory Knight and junior Eric Davis garnered second-team defensive selections.
