Dawgs claim win over BC
By GEORGIA PURDY Newsboy Correspondent

The Jasper Bulldogs opened district play with a 65-61 win over Bridge City Dec. 18 on the road.

Jasper trailed 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 31-25 at the half.

Jasper rallied in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 17-13 in the third and 23-17 in the fourth period.

"We were down early as we didn't seem to come out with much focus and intensity," Coach Terry Young said. "My halftime speech was short, 'Guys if we don't win this one, our playoff hopes are out the window'. As an adjustment, we came out and played our quick team (4 guards and one post) and pressed and trapped for the entire second half and wore them down. To our kids' credit, they turned up the intensity won by displaying great effort and enthusiasm."

Dominique Bailey was the top scorer with 25 points. Roderick Kyles had 13 points, followed by Kwame Spikes, seven; DJ Jackson, six; Jared Bronson, Roderick Williams, three each, and Terrence Avant two.

"It was much tougher than I thought it should have been, but the positive thing is that we won," Coach Terry Young said. "I thought our kids did what was necessary to stay in the hunt for the playoffs. A loss against this opponent would have been difficult to overcome."

The Bulldogs played in the East Chambers tournament Dec. 27-29 and JV will go to the Spurger tournament during that same time period.

District play resumes Jan. 4 when Jasper plays West Orange-Stark on the road.
