Jasper Boy Scouts got an eagle's eye view of East Texas, including a fly-over of Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin recently.

They first visited Jasper's Bell Field and then took off from the Angelina County airport with EAA Chapter 1219, who had gathered more than 70 planes for the Fiesta Fly-In.

"Each boy was assigned to an individual pilot and was able to fly," said scoutmaster Lloyd Persons.

At Bell Field, "The scouts learned all about the non-manned airport and how it is used," said Persons. "This included runway markings, airport lights, types of fuel and communications."

At the Angelina County airport, they watched the fly-in, viewed experimental craft and saw the airport's radar.

Licensed pilot Ralph Day of Day Forestry is teaching the aviation course. They have one more meeting before qualifying for their aviation merit badge.
