JISD to hold election with city again
By GEORGIA PURDY Newsboy Correspondent

The Jasper Independent School District Board of Trustees met Monday night, Jan. 14, and approved a motion to hold the 2008 Trustee election in conjunction with the city of Jasper.

It is the second consecutive year that the May election will be held on the same day that the city holds its election of officials. The joint election came about as a result of a Special Called Session of the Texas Legislature in 2006 requiring that school districts hold elections for trustees jointly either with a municipality located in the school district or with those political subdivisions holding the general election for state and county offices.

The board also approved extending the contract of Amy Fountain, counselor at Parnell Elementary, from 209 to 219 days for 2007-2008. Fountain's extension is for the purpose of assisting with testing.

The board accepted the recommendation of the district's tax attorney to deny a request for waiver of penalty and interest from a property owner whose taxes were delinquent.

In addition to the business meeting, the board recognized a large number of students for their achievements.
