Patience key to getting weatherization assistance

If cold drafts are blowing through your home, you may qualify for the free Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA); requirements include low-income and persistence.

The funding comes from the U.S. Dept. of Energy and is administered locally by Tri- County Community Action in Center; call 936 598-6215 to apply. Even renters can apply, with their landlord's approval.

If you qualify, the program pays for an energy audit to identify air leaks and other energy inefficiencies, and pays for installation of weather stripping, caulking, or adding insulation to meet energy-specific savings goals.

The average estimated increase in value to your home is $1,000. The estimated savings in utility costs is $300 per year, according to the TDHCA website.

However, be prepared to wait. The average number of households in Texas who receive WAP assistance is 5,400 per year. The average waiting list on any given day is 14,400.
