John Thomas Capps Jr.

John Thomas Capps Jr., 89, of Sam Rayburn, passed away Wednesday evening, January 16, 2008 at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill. A native of Panola County, Texas, he was a former resident of Sacramento, California, and Lake Tahoe, California, but had lived in the Sam Rayburn Area for some 25 years and was a devoted member of the Rayburn Baptist Church.

John was a member and a 32nd degree Mason with the McGee, Mississippi Masonic Lodge, a member of the Shrine and had traveled the world. He also was an avid reader of the Sacramento Bee and the Houston Chronicle for over 50 years. John served in the U.S. Army during WWII and later retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 21, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at Rayburn Baptist Church under the direction of Forest Oaks Funeral Home of Jasper. Masonic and Military graveside rites followed at the Antioch Cemetery in Carthage, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, by 12 brothers and sisters, and by a son.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Clara Myers Capps of Sam Rayburn; his son, Ronald W. Capps of Brookeland; his daughter, Nancy Carol Cavaness and husband Robert of Lake Tahoe, CA; along with 7 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be directed toward the Rayburn Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5118, Sam Rayburn, TX 75951, or toward the Sabine County Hospital, 2301 HWY 83W, Hemphill, TX 75948.
