Fire siren back in service

"Don't be alarmed by the alarm," is the word from the Jasper Volunteer Fire Department, according to JVFD volunteer Bob Gary, who also works for the city of Jasper.

The fire siren has been out of service for several years because the metal tower corroded and needed to be replaced.

City workers reinstalled the siren last week. It will sound one long wail each day at noon, Monday through Saturday, as a test for the system and a time signal within the community.

"We wanted to be sure everyone is aware that we will be reactivating the siren soon. In some communities, sirens like this are used as warnings for tornadoes, and such, and we don't want anyone to worry when they hear the noon alarm," Gary said.
