Walking the halls
By VANESSA PHILLIPS Principal of Few Primary

Here we are mid-way through the year, and before we know it, it will be May 30. Walking the halls of Few Primary you will see students eagerly learning in a variety of ways. One teaching method that is used in pre-kindergarten through second grade is learning centers/work stations.

This activity gives the teacher the opportunity to work with students one-on-one or in small groups while the other children are working on various activities independently or paired with another student reinforcing what has already been taught.

Reading is important in all aspects of life. In order to determine a student's needs, the teachers in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade have completed administering the mid-year TPRI (Texas Primary Reading Instrument) to all students. This assessment provides information for teachers to use in order to plan the most appropriate reading instruction for each child in the areas of phonemic awareness, graphophonemic knowledge (the ability to identify letters of the alphabet and understand the sounds that the letters represent), and comprehension.

Thank you to everyone who attended the successful district-wide parent mini-conference on Jan. 28 hosted by Jasper ISD. This event gave parents the opportunity to learn different ways to help their child be successful in school. Staff and community members presented these beneficial sessions. The class in each grade level with most parent representation won an ice cream party.

These classes are: Pre-Kindergarten - Ms. Arriaga, Kindergarten - Mrs. Shierry, First Grade - Mrs. Carter, and Second Grade - Ms. Dickerson.

The Tim and Laura Show, sponsored by the Jasper Pilot Club, will be at Few, March 27. This show has been entertaining our students for a number of years. Harvey Rabbit along with Laura, Tim and many other friends perform skits and actively involve students in an effort to make students aware of positive characteristics in life. Their skits teach the children to be proud of themselves, make healthy choices, resist negative peer pressure, and peacefully resolve conflicts. Few students and staff look forward to this show every year.

In closing, walking the halls of Few Primary you will see learning occurring everywhere; our parents, teachers, staff and administrators are all partners in the education of each child at Few Primary.
