Schools rest safely in hands of local officers

Just the thought of an assailant in one of our local schools sends shivers down the spine of any parent, educator or student.

Unfortunately, it is a reality that we all must face as more and more schoolrelated shootings are making the headlines across the country. A place that was once considered a haven for all children has now became a possible battleground.

It is encouraging to see local law enforcement officials take a pro-active approach to the issue as they held an exercise to teach officers how to deal with this issue.

The exercise placed officers in a school in which an active shooter is assaulting innocent victims and gave them different scenarios to deal with. The officers were faced with issues such as being shot at, dealing with hostages and even bombs being tossed at them.

All of this training was made available through grants that were secured by the Jasper Police Department.

It is this type of forward thinking that will keep Jasper law enforcement ahead of the curve when it comes to dealing with these type of situations.

Nobody wants to see these situations in Jasper County but it is calming to know that our law enforcment will be ready if the situation arises.
