Fire marshal offers free class on new smoke detector law

New state laws require all property owners, renters, landlords, property managers, contractors and remodelers to install smoke detectors in certain circumstance. Because the law is new and people may have questions, Jasper City Fire Marshal Stephen Williamson will offer a free briefing Tuesday, April 8, at three different times: 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall at 465 S. Main in Jasper.

State law requires smoke detectors to be installed in all new construction, existing properties during a remodel, and certain properties that are sold. The law already required landlords to furnish smoke detectors in single and multi-family housing.

According to the state fire marshal's office, a working smoke detector triples your chances of surviving a fire.

Williamson can explain the different types of detectors, how many and where to install them.

For more information, contact the fire marshal's office at 384-4651.
