Bagpiper in Border Patrol Jasper native

John Alford Letney
John Alford Letney is the lone bagpiper left in the Laredo south sector of the U. S. Border Patrol. As such, he is often called to play in funerals and at state occasions.

Letney is a 1980 Jasper High School graduate who played trumpet in the band. After graduation, he attended Sam Houston State University and graduated in 1984 with a major in criminal justice.

He worked for various law enforcement agencies before applying and being accepted to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia, where he graduated in 1998.

He is currently assigned to a Border Patrol unit near Laredo. He plays bagpipes and bugle for the Pipe and Drum Corps.

In the picture (taken a couple of years ago) Letney is shown in his Scottish kilt in front the capitol building in Austin. He also played the pipes at George W. Bush's inauguration in Washington.

Letney is the son of John K. Letney of Jasper.
