Animal shelter finally getting off the ground

The animal shelter is moving forward.

According to Joe Lanier, property on Hi-Truitt Road is in the process of being cleared by city of Jasper crews and the Jasper Lakes Area Humane Society will proceed with the construction of the building.

Jasper City Manager Alan Grindstaff said once the building is complete, it will be handed over to the city for management of the building.

"Once the building is complete, (JLAHS) will hand it over to the city," Grindstaff said.

The building has been a constant discussion during recent Jasper city council meetings but it appears that finally the building is in the process of being constructed.

With an eye to rising construction costs, the JLAHS is pushing for memberships and donations to help fund the proposed animal shelter, according to Lanier.

Memberships are $20 for an individual, $30 for a family, $40 for a business and $60 for a patron. JLAHS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so donations in any amount are tax deductible.

Monthly meetings are the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Jasper City Hall council chambers at 465 S. Main.

The inactive Humane Society of Jasper County raised the bulk of funds for construction of a shelter; JLAHS is seeking operating costs from the communities, businesses and individuals.

Call the society at 381- 8488 for more details or to adopt one of the pets currently in foster homes.
