No charges filed on double voting case in county

The results of the investigation into a woman in the south part of Jasper County who allegedly voted twice has been completed and turned in to District Attorney Steve Hollis with no charges filed, according to DPS trooper Danny Young.

Young said he thought the woman made a mistake and there was no criminal intent in this case.

Jasper County Clerk Debbie Newman said several counties throughout the state have had problems with double voting due to a glitch in the new system in Austin, which has been fixed.

"In any process involving people there will be some percentage of error," Newman said. "But we take this very seriously."

"I want the integrity of the election to be pure," Newman said, "and we do everything we can to ensure that."

Hollis said, "It is a third degree felony for a person to knowingly vote or attempt to vote more than once in a primary, run-off or general election... (and) carries a range of punishment of two to 10 years in the penitentiary and a fine of up to $10,000."
