Jasper Head Start wins awards
Parents, educators honored at banquet

Bess Childers would be tickled to know the children at "her" school are winning awards again. Trinity School closed as a private school two years ago but reopened as a Head Start pre-school in 2007.

This year at the Tri-County Community Action's Head Start parent appreciation dinner April 11, the Jasper school won the trophies for best banner and for best act in the children's talent show.

Long-time friend Judith Clower said after Childers' death recently, "When Head Start opened in the old school building she was so pleased that learning is still taking place in her school."

At the dinner in the JJHS cafeteria, parents voted the winners of the talent and banner contests. Marcus Hafford was named father of the year, Lora Burns mother of the year.

JHS Coach Terry Young was recognized for bringing his young athletes to read to the children, and several parents received awards for outstanding involvement with the program.

Head Start Director Patricia Gulley said the school is now taking applications for the next school year, which begins in August.

Head Start programs have been helping low income and disadvantage children get a head start on an education, health and nutrition for more than 40 years. The allday program includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.

Parents can call 383- 0867 or 383-0059, or come by during the week to fill out the paperwork. The school is located next to Trinity Episcopal Church at Main and Collier Streets in Jasper.
