Walker to challenge for council District #5 post

Wincy Walker
Political activist Wincy Walker has announced her candidacy for Jasper City Council District #5 at-large position.

Walker said her decision to seek the position came after hearing a local radio program.

"When listening to "Pizza Talks" and heard "Pizza" and/or Wayne say, over a matter of weeks, "This city council is a 'rubber stamp'...city council raised taxes...tap fees over $650 hurt economic development," I thought that "Pizza" was working on his platform to run for city council," Walker said. "Like true politicians, they were being creative and misleading. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, but not to broadcast false facts. I decided then that if he ran, he wouldn't be alone."

Walker is a retired public school Speech/Language therapist and have been back in Jasper for 16 years.

Walker also wanted to answer critcism she has felt during a Thursday night call-in radio show when host Mike Lout, according to Walker, made the following statement.

"I don't know why Wincy Walker wants to run because she never goes to city council meetings," Lout said during the program.

"The reason I am running is simple," Walker said in response to the comment. "I am caregiver for my bedridden mother and I don't go a lot of places at night, where I don't have a vote. I would be there if elected and have been to many council meetings in the past.

"Lout earlier identified Randy "Nay" Sayers as who he thinks is "the best" on council now and I believe Sayer's first council meeting was when he was sworn in," Walker said. "If you don't think like them you are held to a different standard. I definitely don't think like them and am proud to be held to a higher standard. I believe the same rules should apply to everybody. That's why I'm running."
