Wilderness Pow Wow set for this weekend in Big Thicket

Village Creek State Park in Lumberton, just a few miles south of Jasper County, will host the 29th annual Texas Wilderness Pow Wow April 25-27, the first time it has been held in the Big Thicket.

Blocks of campsites have been set aside and tour guides arranged for field trips for campers and day visitors.

You can take a canoe or boat trip on the Neches River with Lamar's Environmental Learning Center guides, or take a self-guided hike on one of many walking trails. The Village Creek Dutch Oven cookers will demonstrate how to cook in cast iron over an open campfire. For a donation to cover cost, you can sample their fare.

Several local clubs like the East Texas Archeology Society will have booths to explain the history of the region and especially the pre-Columbian Caddo Indian mounds found in East Texas. Children and adults can gather in a tepee to hear folklore tales.
